The European biofuel industry has decided to set up a permanent register to identify the origin of biofuels used in the European Union (EU).

The European biofuel industry has decided to set up a permanent register to identify the origin of biofuels used in the European Union (EU).

The Register of Biofuels Origination (RBO) was launched on 16 January on the initiative of the European Biodiesel Board (EBB), which represents the interests of European biodiesel producers.
According to the Europolitics website, the register will support the European Parliament and European Commission’s draft directive which is setting stricter criteria for the use of biofuels, in particular by factoring in indirect land use changes (ILUC). The Commission is aiming to encourage second-generation biofuels produced from waste, residues or non-conventional sources like algae by awarding them a “climate bonus” that doubles their contribution to emissions reduction (“double counting”).
