Canadian agri-food cooperative La Coop Fédérée (LCF) has agreed to acquire a 50% stake in its compatriot Ontario-based animal feed producer W-S Feed & Supplies.
W-S operated two feed mills in Tavistock – where it is also headquartered – and Mount Forest, where it produced feeds for dairy cattle, organic, beef swine and poultry production, reported World Grain on 28 August.
The Mount Forest mill produced both organic and non-organic feed for swine and poultry, while the Tavistock mill supplied feed for multiple species.
Ghislain Gervais, president at LCF, said the investment in W-S represented a strategic entry into the animal nutrition industry on the Ontario market.
“This partnership develops our portfolio of operations in the province and shows how important it is for us to provide farmers across the country with quality products and solutions for their animal feed,” said Gervais.
LCF’s agri-business division entered the animal feed sector in Canada through its April acquisition of Standard Nutrition Canada, and it also acquired Cargill’s Ontario-based crop input and grain assets earlier in the year.
Among other activities, LCF’s agri-business division sources oil crops, such as soya and canola, and also develops seed varieties and fertilisers.
