Despite a reduction in sunflower area, EU sunflower production for 2016 has picked up from the previous year, particularly due to extensive output in Hungary, Germany’s Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP) said on 10 November.

“The 2016 production of sunflowerseed will likely outstrip the fairly average 2015 output,” it said. “According to information published by Agrarmarkt Informations GmbH, the European Commission puts the 2016 sunflower area at around 4.16M ha, a minimal reduction of 0.7% compared to the previous year. By contrast, the EU28 sunflower harvest is currently forecast at 8.13M tonnes, up 4.4% from the year-ago level.”

The growth in output was due to increased productivity, UFOP said.

“Compared to 2015, average yields in 2016 rose by 5.4% to just less than 20 decitonnes/ha.”

Hungary had also increased its output, becoming the biggest producer of sunflowers in the EU28 in the current season, UFOP added.
