Swedish plant-based oils company AAK and US biotechnology company Checkerspot have agreed to work together to develop, scale and produce new sustainable algae oil.

Checkerspot produces a range of products and food ingredients via a process of microalgae fermentation and its portfolio is divided into three sectors: industrial materials; personal care; and food and nutrition.

The company’s range includes high oleic algae oil for the industrial and food and feed sectors.

“Checkerspot’s growing portfolio of oils and their expertise in microalgae fermentation make them the ideal partner for us to collaborate with to meet the growing demand for alternatives that are both functional and sustainable,” AAK global head of R&D Kim Olofsson said on 21 March.

“We’re excited to tap into their … platform to develop and commercialise new oils using microalgae.”

AAK’s products are used in a range of applications in the food, confectionery, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical and animal feed industries.
