Global agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and Wolf Carbon Solutions signed a partnership on 11 January aimed at further decarbonising ADM’s operations.
As part of the partnership, Wolf Carbon Solutions would develop a pipeline for the capture, compression and transportation of CO2 produced at ADM’s Clinton and Cedar Rapids facilities in Iowa, ADM said.
The 563km (350 miles) pipeline will have the capacity to transport 12M tonnes/year of CO2 from ADM’s ethanol and co-generation facilities in Clinton and Cedar Rapids for permanent underground at the company’s sequestration site in Decatur, Illinois, according to the statement.
ADM said the pipeline would have significant spare capacity to serve other third-party customers looking to decarbonise their operations across the Midwest and Ohio River Valley regions.
“This partnership is an excellent example of industries working together to decarbonise and deliver upon their [Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance] ESG strategies and commitments,” Wolf Carbon Solutions president David Schmunk said.
“Our organisations offer a… combination of complementary skills and experience — ADM with more than 10 years of experience owning and operating CO2 sequestration wells, and the Wolf Carbon Solutions team with expertise in owning and operating carbon capture facilities and pipeline transportation systems, including North America’s largest third-party CO2 pipeline in Alberta, Canada.”
ADM said its carbon capture and sequestration facilities in Decatur had allowed it to safely and permanently store more than 3.5M tonnes of CO2 deep underground, leading the way for increased decarbonisation of the company’s operations.
“Customers are increasingly turning to us to help them meet their Scope 3 emissions commitments with low carbon-intensity sustainable solutions,” ADM president (Carbohydrate Solutions) Chris Cuddy said.
Wolf Carbon Solutions is an affiliate of Alberta-based energy infrastructure organisation Wolf Midstream (Wolf). Wolf operates the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL) system – a fully-integrated, world-scale carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) system that captures, transports and permanently sequesters CO2.
