Swedish fluid handling, centrifugal and heat transfer company Alfa Laval has launched a range of biofuel-ready separators for the marine industry.
Alfa Laval said its new high-speed separators were compatible with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) (EN15940) and with fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) (EN14214 or ASTM D6751) blends comprising residual fuel and/or distillate.
“Biofuels will be the choice for many marine vessels, but customers must be certain that their equipment is prepared for them,” Markus Hoffmann, Alfa Laval global sales manager, marine separation & heat transfer equipment, said.
Although in widespread use, the characteristics of biofuels used could differ widely, which meant they needed additional care when it came to fuel storage and treatment, the company said.
Alfa Laval said the modifications it had made to both internal bowl components and separator software would mean setting up for HVO or FAME blends or conventional fuels would involve a simple parameter change.
An integrated feature of new Alfa Laval separators, the developments were also available as upgrades for existing separators, the company said.
Stockholm-headquartered Alfa Laval specialises in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and fluid handling systems, and is active in the energy, marine and food & water sectors.
