Swedish fluid handling, centrifugal and heat transfer company Alfa Laval has secured US$31.8M (SEK350M) in contracts to supply technology to Cepsa Bioenergia San Roque’s biofuel joint venture with Bio-Oils Energy in Huelva, Spain.

Scheduled to be operational in 2026, the biofuel facility would double Spanish multinational oil and gas company Cepsa’s total renewable fuels production – sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel – to 1M tonnes/year, Alfa Laval said on 13 November.

The new plant would source most of its feedstock – organic waste such as agricultural residues or used cooking oils – through a global, long-term agreement with Bio-Oils’ parent company, Apical, Cepsa said on 23 February when work started on the plant.

As part of the contract, Alfa Laval said its Food & Water Division would supply two different pre-treatment units to the €1.2bn (US$1.26bn) project.

“The biggest challenge in the biofuel industry is to triple capacity by 2030. The volume increase is essential, and we are excited for Alfa Laval to play an important role in this transition,” Alfa Laval president, Food & Water Division, Sammy Hulpiau said.

The plant is designed to emit 75% less CO2 than a traditional biofuel plant.
