Sunflower oil exports from Bulgaria reached a new record in the 2021/22 season, increasing by 39% compared to the previous marketing year, UkrAgroConsult reported.

Of total sunflower oil exports, the European Union (EU)’s share was 65%, with 16% going to South Africa, and India and Iraq among the main importers.

The record volumes highlight Bulgaria’s role in filling the gap left by lower supplies from Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict with Russia, according to the 20 January report.

Bulgaria’s 2021/22 sunflowerseed harvest of 2M tonnes was the second highest recorded due to an expansion in planted area and the second highest recorded yield, the report said.

EU countries were also the main sunflowerseed export destinations of Bulgaria, receiving 66% of all shipments, with China also among the top importers.

The 2022 record sunflower harvest of more than 2M tonnes could lead to increased sunflowerseed and oil exports from Bulgaria, UkrAgroConsult wrote.
