Leading US energy company Chevron’s renewable diesel expansion project at its Geismar biorefinery in Louisiana is undergoing final commissioning, according to a Biodiesel magazine report quoting company officials.

Aimed at boosting renewable diesel production capacity at the facility from 90 MMg/y to 340 MMg/y, the Geismar expansion project had been underway for several years, the 3 February report said.

During the company’s fourth quarter earnings call, Chevron chairman and CEO Mike Wirth said the project was undergoing final commissioning, Biodiesel magazine wrote.

The Geismar biorefinery was the first renewable diesel plant built by US Dynamic Fuels, a joint venture between Tyson Foods and Syntroleum Corp, and became operational in 2010.

Acquired by Renewable Energy Group (REG) in mid-2014, REG announced the expansion project in 2020.

The project was underway when Chevron acquired REG in mid-2022, the report said.

Chevron produces crude oil and natural gas, and manufactures transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals and additives.
