British food tech start-up Clean Food Group (CFG) has acquired the assets of omega-3 oil manufacturer and supplier Algal Omega 3 (AO3), a company in administration.
The acquisition provided CFG with access to 1M litres of fermentation capacity, the company said on 25 September.
A03 operated a manufacturing site in Liverpool and produced crude algal oil from microalgae using fermentation technology, Business Sale reported wrote on 28 May. It entered administration in May.
The site in Knowsley included extensive research and development facilities with the opportunity for future expansion, CFG said.
CFG, which produces yeast fermentation-derived oils and fats, said it had conducted commercial-scale production at the Liverpool facility, producing 2,000 litres of oil in a fermentation run.
Following the acquisition, CFG said it would be able to produce microbial oils at commercial scale for use in the food, cosmetics and pet food sectors.
On 12 September, CFG announced it had received regulatory approval for its CLEAN Oil 25 product to be used as a cosmetic ingredient in the UK, Europe and the USA.
“With this acquisition, we have fast-tracked our route to market …with commercial-scale validation already established at our new Knowsley facility, Clean Food Group is ready to capitalise on the US$20bn market opportunity ahead, and to advance its planned Series A funding round, now expected for the first half of 2026,” said CFG CEO Alex Neves.
Using its CLEAN OilCell technology platform, CFG produces functional oils (CLEAN Oil) and fats (CLEAN Fat) from food waste, using scalable yeast strains and fermentation technology.
CFG’s CLEAN Oil product was developed in collaboration with beauty manufacturer THG LABS, the R&D and manufacturing arm of THG Beauty, and speciality chemical company Croda.
Founded in 2022 after eight years of research, CFG said it now had collaborations in place with leading global consumer goods and ingredients manufacturers.
