More than 99% of soyabeans sourced from Brazil in the last year by global agribusiness COFCO International was verified as deforestation- and conversion-free, the company announced in its latest sustainability report.
The 2024 sustainability report highlighted the company’s actions on climate change, deforestation and conversion, and the protection of workers.
With land use change the largest contributor to agricultural emissions, COFCO International said it had accelerated its target to achieving deforestation-free soyabean and corn supply chains globally and conversion-free supply chains in South America by the end of 2025.
“In particular, we worked with suppliers to improve traceability and obtain better land use change data, largely in Brazil, enabling us to source commodities more strategically from sites with lower emissions,” COFCO International CEO David Dong said in the report.
The company also reduced the emissions intensity of its Scope 3 Forest, Land and Agriculture footprint by 9% for its soyabeans and 14% for corn, compared to the 2021 baseline year.
COFCO International serves as the overseas agriculture business platform for COFCO Corporation, China's largest food and agriculture company.
