Global agribusiness COFCO International has shipped its first delivery of sustainable soyabeans from Brazil to Bangladesh.
The 40,000 tonne shipment – certified under the company’s independent COFCO International Responsible Agriculture Standard – was delivered on 13 February to the country’s largest agribusiness, Meghna Group of Industries (MGI), the company said on 24 February.
On 18 February, COFCO International also made its first delivery of sustainable soyabeans from Argentina to Vietnam.
The cargo was shipped to Phu My Port, near Ho Chi Minh City, and followed other certified COFCO deliveries to Asia, including China and Thailand. The company has also made shipments to the European Union (EU).
Sold to a leading Vietnamese animal feed ingredients provider, the cargo would supply Vietnam’s export-oriented poultry and aquaculture sectors, the company said.
“Vietnam’s feed industry is closely connected to global markets where sustainability and traceability are increasingly important,” said Vu Chanh Ly, commercial director Vietnam at COFCO International.
COFCO International said it expected to expand its portfolio of sustainable-certified South American soyabeans and corn this year.
The company’s certification programme uses product traceability, satellite imagery monitoring, on-site inspections and independent audits, to ensure farming practices comply with legal, environmental and human rights requirements, with a particular focus on preventing deforestation and conversion.
Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, COFCO International is the overseas agriculture business platform for COFCO Corporation, China’s largest food and agriculture company.
According to its website, COFCO International handled over 108M tonnes of related commodities in 2024 with revenues of US$38.5bn.
Active in global grains, oilseeds, sugar and cotton supply chains, the company has assets in 36 countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific, and it trades with customers in more than 100 nations.
