US renderer and renewable diesel producer Darling Ingredients has announced that its 50/50 joint venture Diamond Green Diesel (DGD) will bring the first regular supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Florida through an agreement between World Fuel and DHL Express.

As part of the agreement, World Fuel Services would deliver approximately 60M gallons (227M litres) of blended SAF – of which 18M gallons (68M litres) would be neat SAF – supplied by Valero Marketing and Supply Co, a subsidiary of Valero Energy Corp, over a two-year period, Darling Ingredients said on 25 September.

Produced by DGD, a joint venture between Valero and Darling Ingredients, the neat SAF would be produced from used cooking oil (UCO) and food waste, the company said.

With SAF production expected to be online in the fourth quarter of this year, DGD said its Port Arthur plant would have the capability to upgrade approximately 50% of its current 470M gallons (1.8bn litres)/year production capacity to SAF.
