The European Commission (EC) has approved four genetically engineered (GE) crops – two cotton, one maize and one soyabean – for food and animal feed, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported.
Published in the EU’s Official Journal on 12 March and valid for 10 years, the authorisations applied to food and feed for import and process but did not cover cultivation, the 27 April Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) report said.
All products would be subject to the EU’s strict labelling and traceability rules.
Submitted by Belgium-based Perseus BV, on behalf of Beijing DaBeiNong Biotechnology Co, the GE soyabean DBN-09004-6 variant was approved for the first time, while the authorisations for the T25 (ACS-ZMØØ3-2) maize and GHB614 × LLCotton25 cotton variants were renewals, the USDA said.
