US production of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is expected to increase in 2027, according to US Energy Information Administration (EIA) data reported by Biodiesel Magazine.
In its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), published on 13 January, the agency said it expected US renewable diesel production to expand to 290,000 barrels/day next year on average, up from its 2026 estimate of 250,000 barrels/day.
In 2025, renewable diesel production averaged 190,000 barrels/day.
The production of “other biofuels” - defined as including renewable heating oil; renewable jet fuel including SAF and alternative jet fuel and biojet; renewable naphtha; renewable gasoline and other emerging biofuels - was forecast to expand to 50,000 barrels/day in 2027, up from the 2026 estimate of 40,000 barrels/day.
Biodiesel production in 2027 was expected to remain unchanged from the 2026 estimate of 100,000 barrels/day.
In 2025, biodiesel production averaged 80,000 barrels/day.
At the time of the EIA report, net imports of renewable diesel were expected to average -20,000 barrels/day, an adjustment when compared to the December STEO outlook of -30,000 barrels/day.
The EIA expected net imports of renewable diesel to remain at -20,000 barrels/day in 2027, Biodiesel Magazine wrote on 13 January.
In 2025, net imports of biodiesel averaged -30,000 barrels/day.
Net imports of biodiesel were expected to be zero in 2026 and 2027, unchanged from the December STEO and 2025 net imports levels.
Net imports of “other” biofuels were expected to be zero in 2026 and 2027, unchanged from the December STEO and 2025 net import levels.
The EIA lowered its forecast for 2026 renewable diesel consumption to 220,000 barrels/day, down from the December outlook of 230,000 barrels/day.
Renewable diesel consumption was expected to expand to 260,000 barrels/day in 2027.
According to the EIA, renewable diesel consumption averaged 160,000 barrels/day in 2025.
The EIA maintained its forecast that biodiesel consumption would average 90,000 barrels/day this year and at the time of the report expected biodiesel consumption to expand to 100,000 barrels/day in 2027.
In 2025, biodiesel consumption was at 70,000 barrels/day.
The consumption of “other” biofuels was expected to average 40,000 barrels/day in 2026, unchanged from the December forecast and the 2025 level of consumption.
In 2027, consumption of “other” biofuels was expected to expand to 50,000 barrels/day.
