Enilive marine hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) will be available in the Italian ports of Ravenna and Venice in the second half of this year, according to a Bunkerspot report.

A subsidiary of Italian energy multinational Eni, Enilive is a leading HVO producer in Europe and globally.

In an email sent to Bunkerspot on 27 May, Eni said that the marine HVO would be available “through barge deliveries in those ports and through truck deliveries in the north of Italy”.

Availability in Taranto (truck deliveries) and Genova (barge deliveries) in the same period was also being evaluated, the company added.

In Italy, Enilive runs a biorefinery in Venice, Porto Marghera, and a second in Gela. A further Italian Eni refinery, in Livorno, is scheduled for conversion by the end of 2026.

The company is also a 50% co-owner of the St Bernard Renewables biorefinery in Chalmette, Louisiana, USA, and has two biorefineries under construction in Malaysia and South Korea.

Enilive HVO is produced using Ecofining technology at the Porto Marghera, Gela and Chalmette biorefineries from renewable raw materials such as vegetable oils and animal waste.

According to Eni, the HVO can be used in pure form in existing marine engines without technical modifications or infrastructure changes and its use could achieve a CO₂ emissions reduction of 60% to 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels over the full life cycle.

To promote the use of biofuels in the maritime sector, Eni said it had also formed partnerships with companies such as RINA and Fincantieri aimed at developing integrated solutions for decarbonising marine transport, including pilot projects and certified methodologies to assess environmental benefits across the entire value chain.
