Japanese biotech firm Euglena is exploring a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply chain project in Bangladesh.

Japan has set a goal of replacing 10% of domestic airline fuel consumption with SAF by 2030, and several SAF production projects were underway in the country, Euglena said on 3 February.

However, the company said used cooking oil (UCO) – the main raw material for SAF – was expected to be impacted by supply shortages and price hikes due to growing global demand, making it important to ensure a stable supply of UCO and alternative raw materials, as well as to build a supply chain to source raw materials.

Although UCO recovery businesses had been expanding in Asian countries, UCO recovery businesses and oilseed production for SAF production were almost non-existent in Bangladesh, Euglena said, adding that it would conduct a UCO recovery feasibility study – to run from February to December.
