Speciality chemical company Evonik has started industrial-scale production of rhamnolipid biosurfactants at its plant in Slovakia.

The new facility is based at Evonik Fermas, the company’s site in Slovenská Ľupča.

Using a fermentation-based process, Evonik produces biosurfactants from corn feedstocks.

Currently used in the cleaning, beauty and personal care industries, the company’s portfolio of biosurfactants also had the potential for use in other applications, including the coatings, animal nutrition and agriculture sectors, Evonik said on 29 May.

Active in more than 100 countries, the company’s Nutrition & Care division develops products for active pharmaceutical ingredients, medical devices, nutrition for humans and animals, personal care, cosmetics and household cleaning.
