The French government has approved the sale of transport fuels made from 100% renewable materials, such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), in the country, according to Finnish biofuel producer Neste.

Prior to the move, sales of 100% HVO – known as HVO100 – had been limited to logistics companies with fuel supply networks, Neste said.

However, the move would allow HVO100 to be sold and used unblended in all user segments in France, the company said on 1 July.

“We are very pleased that the French government has decided to approve the sales of transport fuels from 100% renewable raw materials, allowing … renewable diesel to be sold at all fuel stations,” Neste vice president, Public Affairs, Claudia Stuckmann-Invernizzi said.

“This is a significant step in the fight against climate change and means that … privately operated vehicle fleets and consumers will be able to use this product and … reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.”
