Lighthouse Green Fuels (LGF) has completed front-end engineering design (FEED) for its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility on Teesside, in the UK.
Announced by global project development, manufacturing and engineering group Alfanar, completion of the FEED stage – delivered in partnership with engineering contractor Worley – marked a milestone for the project, LGF said on 11 June.
The development also significantly de-risked the project ahead of a Final Investment Decision (FID), confirming technical integration, engineering configuration, capital cost certainty and delivery strategy for the facility at Seal Sands on Teesside, the company added.
Expected to reach FID by the end of 2027 with targeted operations in 2032, the project would be one of the world’s largest SAF facilities and the first commercial-scale refinery to be built in the UK since the 1960s, according to the company.
Once operational, the facility would produce 180M litres/year of SAF and 30M litres/year of renewable naphtha, from sustainably sourced biomass feedstocks, including forestry and agricultural residues such as sunflower husks.
“At a time of growing concern around energy security, fuel resilience and industrial competitiveness, projects like LGF can play a critical role in strengthening domestic fuel supply chains, supporting economic growth and positioning the UK as a global leader in sustainable fuels,” said Noaman Al Adhami, UK Country Head at Alfanar.
To date, Alfanar had invested approximately £90M (US$119M) into the project, with a further £100M (US$132M) expected to be committed ahead of FID, LGF said.
