UK-based biodiesel supplier Greenergy has temporarily shut operations at its plant in Immingham due to adverse market conditions.

Despite introducing significant cost reduction measures at the site, market conditions remained unsupportive, the company said on 20 May.

Greenergy said it was conducting a strategic review to evaluate the plant’s commercial viability amid the significant challenges facing the UK biofuels industry.

According to its website, Greenergy sources used cooking oil (UCO) globally and converts it to biodiesel.

As well as the Immingham plant, the company operates a second UK biodiesel plant on Teesside and another in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Last January, the company announced it had expanded its plants in the Netherlands and on Teesside to allow for a wider range of waste oils as feedstocks.

The upgrade to the Amsterdam plant had increased production capability by 25% to meet the rising demands for waste-based biofuels across Europe, the company said.

The company has also invested in its own aggregation business based in Singapore and operates a joint venture UCO collection business in Australia with Greenlife Oil.
