The Greenstock pre-treatment (GPF) facility project in Amsterdam led by energy storage and infrastructure company VTTI and renewable feedstocks trader Connex has entered the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase.

The Greenstock pre-treatment (GPF) facility project in Amsterdam led by energy storage and infrastructure company VTTI and renewable feedstocks trader Connex has entered the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase.

Scheduled to become operational in 2029, the facility at VTTI’s terminal in Amsterdam would have a processing capacity of over 400,000 tonnes/year of renewable feedstocks, enabling the production of sustainable fuels, including hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from both standalone and co-processing units, the companies said on 10 December.

The facility would provide customers in Europe with aggregation, blending and pre-treatment capabilities for waste and residue-based feedstocks, including animal fats category 1, 2 and 3, used cooking oil (UCO) and advanced oils and fats, the companies said.

“In partnership with Connex, we are expanding Europe’s access to sustainable feedstocks and enabling the growth of low-carbon fuels. The facility will reinforce Amsterdam’s role as a hub for sustainable fuels,” said Quinten van Dam Merrett, senior vice president at VTTI Netherlands.

The companies said the FEED phase marked a critical milestone in the project’s progression towards construction and commissioning.

During this phase, the project team would develop the basic engineering of the assets, further refining the facility’s technical design, equipment specifications and construction strategy.

During the FEED phase, the companies said they would focus on working closely with local authorities, partnering with technology providers and engineering companies, securing contracts with customers and ensuring compliance with all environmental requirements.

Headquartered in Rotterdam, Connex trades renewable feedstocks such as animal fats, UCO, brown grease and other advanced waste and residue streams for use in the production of renewable diesel and SAF.

Also based in Rotterdam, VTTI develops and operates energy infrastructure, including energy storage terminals, renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities and liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminals.
