US engineering conglomerate Honeywell and bioenergy products development company SGP BioEnergy are working together to develop plant-based biochemical technology.
As part of the partnership, the companies would develop new technology to convert industrial hemp and other plant-based materials into biochemicals for use in the production of plastics and other everyday items, Honeywell said on 8 October.
Honeywell would develop the new technology that enabled plant material to be used as feedstock for biochemical production on an expanded scale, while SGP BioEnergy would provide the infrastructure, workforce and second-generation feedstock, including industrial hemp, for the initiative through its Ready.Grow feedstock development programme.
“This … technology will enable the production of a variety of petrochemical alternatives using second-generation feedstocks,” Honeywell energy and sustainability solutions chief technology and growth officer Bryan Glover said.
