The International Standards Organization (ISO) has published an updated fuel specification for marine applications, US trade association Clean Fuels Alliance America (CFAA) reported.

Setting out detailed requirements for marine fuels, including biodiesel blends up to B100 (100% biodiesel), the new specification marked a significant step forward in promoting sustainable fuel options in the maritime industry, the association said on 4 June.

The aim of the new ISO 8217:2024 specification was to promote the integration of low-carbon liquid fuels, including biodiesel, into the marine fuel supply chain, contributing to greater greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions and supporting efforts to combat climate change, the report said. By ensuring that biodiesel blends up to 100% met rigorous performance standards, maintaining engine efficiency and reliability, the new specification addressed critical parameters such as viscosity, flash point and sulphur content.

“With the adoption of this updated specification, we are paving the way for higher blends of biodiesel use in marine transportation,” CFAA technical director Scott Fenwick said.

“Biodiesel offers a viable solution for reducing emissions now while promoting sustainability on a global scale.”

The approval of ISO 8217:2024 followed extensive collaboration between industry stakeholders and technical experts to ensure that the specification met the practical needs of the maritime sector while supporting a changing regulatory environment, the report said.
