Technology and engineering supplier KBR has signed a licensing agreement to supply hydrogen and derivative fuel solution provider Avina Clean Hydrogen with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology for its project in the USA.

Under the terms of the contract, KBR would provide the technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, and front-end engineering design (FEED) for Avina’s ethanol-to-SAF facility to produce 120M gallons (454M litres)/year of SAF, the companies said on 6 August.

As part of the agreement, KBR will supply PureSAF technology – developed by Swedish Biofuels and exclusively licensed by KBR worldwide – for the project in Illionois.

PureSAF produces jet fuel that is interchangeable with conventional jet fuel from a range of feedstocks. In addition to processing ethanol, the technology can also convert mixed alcohols, carbon dioxide, and synthesis gas to SAF.

Active in more than 80 countries with operations in more than 30, KBR provides science, technology and engineering solutions to governments and companies around the world.

A leading provider of hydrogen and derivative fuel solutions, Avina Clean Hydrogen’s focus is on researching and developing clean solutions for a range of industries, including transportation, energy and manufacturing.

Established in 2020, Stockholm-based Swedish Biofuels conducts research into sustainable biofuels.
