Global agribusiness giant Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) has acquired a grain and oilseeds storage facility in Nueva Palmira, Uruguay, after operating the warehouse for six years.
The acquisition consolidated LDC’s position in a strategic agricultural area 2.5km from Nueva Palmira port, Uruguay’s main grains and oilseeds export terminal, the company said on 3 December.
Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
With a static storage capacity of 38,000 tonnes and additional storage capacity of 12,000 tonnes in silo bags, LDC said the facility could store and condition a range of crops, including soyabeans, wheat, rapeseed and carinata, with plans to store camelina.
“The investment reflects our long-term commitment to the country, contributing to Uruguay’s continued development as an important exporter of agricultural goods, and aligns with the group’s strategy to further reinforce its core merchandising capabilities, based on strong partnerships with local producers,” LDC’s head of grains & oilseeds origination for Uruguay, Mario Sampaolesi said.
LDC said further investments were planned for 2025 to enhance the plant’s technology and optimise its operational efficiency.
In the 2024/25 marketing year, Uruguay is forecast to produce 1M tonnes of corn, 3.4M tonnes of soyabeans and 1.3M tonnes of wheat, according to forecasts by the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service.
