Dubai-based biofuel producer Lootah Biofuels has launched a smart app to expand its used cooking oil (UCO) collection network in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Zawya reported.

Suitable for Android and iOS platforms, the app was aimed at encouraging individuals, businesses and institutions to join the company’s UCO collection network, the 30 January report said.

Using the smart app, which is available in Arabic and English, users could request home collection of UCO. An interactive map within the app also gave the locations of biodiesel fuel stations and collection centres, Zawya wrote.

“We are committed to employing the latest technologies and solutions across all stages of our operations to accelerate the adoption of … sustainable practices,” Lootah Biofuels founder and CEO Yousif Bin Saeed Lootah was quoted as saying.

“Our initiatives encourage individuals and institutions to contribute to sustainability and the circular economy by leveraging available channels to collect used cooking oil and convert it into … biofuel.”

To encourage participation in the scheme, users would receive financial incentives via a built-in digital wallet within the app, the report said.

In addition, the app included a calculator for users to track and monitor the amount of oil collected.

Although less than 50% of UCO in the UAE was recycled at the time of the report, Lootah Biofuels has set a target of increasing the rate to more than 80%.

According to its website, Lootah Biofuels produces a total of more than 60M litres/year of biofuels.
