Finnish renewable fuels producer Neste is partnering with Japanese trading company Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) to develop supply chains for renewable chemicals and plastics in Japan.
The partnership would focus on providing materials for the food and beverage, apparel, clothing and consumer electronics sectors, the companies said on 16 July.
As part of the agreement, Neste said it would provide its expertise in sustainability and sustainable materials, such as its renewable product Neste RE, a bio-based raw material for plastics production.
MC would provide its experience in business development and supply chain management of petrochemical products and derivatives in the region.
Together, the partners said they would offer solutions for Japanese brands looking to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reliance on fossil resources in their supply chains.
“Through this partnership, we will be able to provide sustainability-minded companies in Japan with a full package to reduce their plastics-related GHG emissions,” Neste renewable products senior vice president, commercial, Carrie Song said.
In an earlier collaboration between Neste and MC, the companies announced last August they would be working together with leading Asian energy company ENEOS to enable the production of renewable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles for Japanese brewer and distiller Suntory. A multi-party collaboration was also announced to produce clothing from bio-based materials for Goldwin.
“Our strength lies in our capability to establish supply chains and access a wide variety of brand owners in Japan,” MC business development division chief operating officer Yoshiyuki Watanabe said.
