Finnish renewable fuels producer Neste has announced it is set to invest in new renewable products production capacity at its Rotterdam refinery due to growing demand for renewable products.
At 1.4M tonnes/year, Neste’s current capacity for renewable products in Rotterdam is the largest in Europe, according to the company’s 27 June statement, and the US$1.93bn (€1.9bn) Rotterdam refinery expansion will increase overall renewable product capacity by 1.3M tonnes/year, bringing total renewable product capacity to 2.7M tonnes/year.
Following the expansion, production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the Rotterdam plant would be 1.2M tonnes/year.
Neste said the new production unit was due to become operational in the first half of 2026.
“The investment… will bring a substantial amount of renewable diesel, SAF and renewable feedstock for polymers and chemicals to our sustainability-focused customers,” Neste president and CEO Matti Lehmus said.
Neste said it had a current global renewable products capacity of 3.3M tonnes/year and the company’s ongoing Singapore expansion project and a joint venture with Marathon Petroleum in Martinez, California, that was still pending for closing, would increase its total production capacity of renewable products to 5.5M tonnes/year by the end of next year.
When completed, the Rotterdam expansion project would further increase the company’s total production capacity of renewable products to 6.8M tonnes/year by the end of 2026, Neste said.
