Finnish renewable fuels producer Neste is modifying its existing production capacity in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the company announced on 29 April.

The refinery currently produces mainly Neste MY renewable diesel but, following modification, the company said it would be able to produce up to 500,000 tonnes/year of SAF.

Neste said it expected the project to be completed in the second half of 2023.

“This SAF investment in Rotterdam is another important step for Neste in the execution of our growth strategy: to become a global leader in renewable and circular solutions,” said Neste president and CEO Peter Vanacker.

Neste’s current SAF production capacity is 100,000 tonnes/year but, following the investment in Rotterdam and the ongoing expansion of its Singapore refinery, capacity would increase to 1.5M tonnes/year by the end of 2023.

The company said it was also waiting for a final investment decision on its plan for a new renewable products refinery project in Rotterdam towards the end of this year or early 2022.
