Global energy company Moeve – formerly known as Cepsa – has signed a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply contract with Norwegian airlines.
As part of the agreement, Norwegian used SAF supplied by Moeve for flights from Las Palmas airport in Spain to Nordic countries, primarily Norway and Sweden, as well as Denmark, at the end of last year, Moeve said on 3 February.
Moeve produces SAF at its La Rábida Energy Park (Huelva) from used cooking oil (UCO).
“We agree with the widespread industry view that SAF is the only immediate solution for achieving more sustainable aviation,” Moeve director of sustainable aviation Álvaro Macarro said.
“We are proud to supply SAF on a permanent basis at Spain’s major airports, and this latest supply contract with Norwegian is a crucial step in reducing CO2 emissions across the industry.”
Norwegian has set a target of achieving 45% lower CO2 emissions by 2030.
In partnership with other companies, Moeve said it was building a new plant with a flexible production capacity of 0.5M tonnes of SAF and renewable diesel that would form part of the largest second-generation biofuels complex in southern Europe when it becomes operational in 2026.
This project was helping the company make further progress towards its goal of becoming the top producer of second-generation biofuels in Spain and Portugal, with an annual production capacity of 2.5M tonnes of biofuels by 2030, of which 800,000 tonnes would be SAF, Moeve said.
