Japanese chemical firm Nippon Yuka Kogyo (Nippon Yuka), an NYK Group company, is set to launch Japan’s first antioxidant for marine biofuel.

Developed by Nippon Yuka based on property analyses of the biofuel used in NYK-operated vessels, BioxiGuard was formulated to improve the oxidation stability of biodiesel, the company said on 21 May.

When added to biofuel, BioxiGuard slowed the progression of oxidative degradation and helped prevent issues such as metal corrosion and strainer blockage, NYK said.

According to laboratory tests conducted by Nippon Yuka researchers, the addition of BioxiGuard at a concentration of 1:500 resulted in an approximate 50% reduction in the rate of biofuel degradation compared to untreated biofuel.

The new product would be available from 10 August, the company said.

NYK’s services include container shipping, logistics, marine transportation, dry bulk shipping and energy.
