Global marine energy supplier Peninsula has added an IMO II chemical tanker, the Aalborg, to its fleet to supply biofuel in the Port of Barcelona.
The vessel would supply fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) produced from vegetable oils, the company said on 24 April.
While traditional fuel barges could not supply biofuels exceeding a 25% bio component (B25), the new tanker could supply 100% biofuel (B100), Peninsula added.
Equipped to blend multiple bio-feedstocks and traditional fuels along with a certificate detailing the bio component percentage, the company said the tanker would help ship owners comply with the impending Fuel EU Maritime regulation.
“A biofuel supply vessel permitted to supply up to 100% bio component will provide Port of Barcelona users with a solution to decarbonise their activity and to fully comply with EU regulations,” Port of Barcelona president Lluís Salvadó said.
Working within a global network of 16 ports, Peninsula supplies marine fuel and also resells it.
The independent company also provides a range of marine services, including dedicated barging facilities and a worldwide in-house ship repair and maintenance network.
