Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras has chosen process technology specialist Topsoe as a technical provider for its new sustainable aviation plant (SAF) in Brazil.
As part of the agreement, Topsoe said it would deliver technology, including its Hydroflex technology, and services for the proposed facility at Petrobras’ Boaventura Energy Complex, in Itaboraí, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.
Once operational, the facility would be one of the largest SAF plants in Brazil, Topsoe said on 25 February.
When first announcing the project in August, Petrobras said it expected to produce up to 16,000 barrels/day (bpd) of SAF and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) from 950,000 tonnes/year of vegetable-based feedstocks and animal fat.
At that time, the company said it expected contracts to be signed in the second half of 2026 and works to begin at the end of that year.
“It [the project] represents an important step toward strengthening fuel diversification in one of the world’s most dynamic energy markets,” said Yassir Ghiyati, CCO at Topsoe.
Headquartered in Denmark, Topsoe is a developer and supplier of decarbonisation technology, catalysts and services for the energy transition sector.
HydroFlex converts fats, oils and greases into drop-in renewable jet fuel and diesel and can be used in both grassroots units and revamps for co-processing or fully renewable applications.
