Russia – the world’s leading sunflowerseed producer – is expected to reach a new production record in the coming season, according to US Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates reported by Germany’s Union for the Promotion of Plants and Protein (UFOP).
In its June estimate for global oilseed production, the USDA forecast Russian sunflowerseed output at 19.5M tonnes in the upcoming season.
The record harvest – an increase of approximately 11% compared with the current season – would be due to a 7% year-on-year expansion in sunflower planted area to 11.2M ha and an increase in yields to 17.4 decitonnes/ha compared to 16.7 decitonnes/ha the previous year, the 17 June UFOP report said.
According to research by Agrarmarkt Informations‑Gesellschaft, the estimates would mean Russia maintained its position as the leading global sunflowerseed producer, ahead of Ukraine and the EU-27.
