Leading airline company the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has ordered 1,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Finnish renewable fuels producer Neste.

The agreement would make SIA and the group’s subsidiary Scoot the first airlines operating out of Singapore’s Changi Airport to receive Neste MY SAF produced at the company’s refinery in the country, Neste said on 6 May.

After blending MY SAF with conventional jet fuel according to required safety specifications, Neste said it would deliver the blended jet fuel to Changi Airport’s fuel hydrant system in two batches, firstly in the second quarter of this year and again in the fourth quarter.

The delivery would also mark the first direct supply of Neste’s SAF to airlines at Changi Airport following the completed expansion of the company’s Singapore refinery in May 2023, which now had 1M tonnes/year of SAF capacity, Neste said.

“This supply of locally produced SAF to Changi Airport is a milestone in our journey of supporting the aviation industry and governments in the region to achieve their emissions reduction goals,” Neste vice president (Renewable Aviation) Alexander Kueper said.

“Singapore is a leading aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region and this delivery of SAF, as well as the recently announced national SAF target, will hopefully encourage the wider adoption of SAF across the broader Asia Pacific region.”

Singapore Airlines chief sustainability office Lee Wen Fen said the agreement with Neste was an important milestone in the SIA Group’s aim to have a minimum of 5% SAF in its total fuel usage by 2030.

Neste’s SAF is produced from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil (UCO) and animal fat waste.
