Renewable energy infrastructure developer Solarig is set to develop a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Teruel, Spain.

Part of its 400,000 tonnes/year SAF portfolio in Spain, the Teruel project - named Turboleta SAF - would have a SAF production capacity of more than 75,000 tonnes/year, the company said on 22 November.

Involving an estimated investment of €1.15bn (US$1.21bn), construction of the plant on a 10ha site in the Platea industrial park in Teruel was scheduled to begin in 2027 and expected to be operational before 2030, Solarig said.

The project would include renewable assets directly connected to the industrial plant, such as a solar photovoltaic plant, a wind farm and a battery energy storage system.

“This new facility … leverages the region’s natural resources, such as sun, wind and water, as well as biogas and biogenic CO2 from our facilities, derived from agro-livestock waste in the area,” Solarig chairman and CEO Miguel Ángel Calleja said.

In a bid to secure financial support from the European Next Generation EU funds, the company has submitted the Turboleta SAF project to the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE)’s Incentive Program for Renewable Hydrogen Production and Consumption Projects (Clusters or Valleys).

Solarig develops, finances, builds and operates infrastructure for energy transition.

Headquartered in Madrid, Spain, Solarig is active in Europe, Central and South America, Japan and Australia.
