Production has started at energy company St1 and Swedish forestry company Svenska Cellulosa SCA’s jointly owned renewable fuel biorefinery in Gothenburg.

Once fully operational, the Gothenburg refinery would produce around 200,000 tonnes/year of renewable fuel from a range of feedstocks including used cooking oil (UCO), animal fats and tall oil fatty acids, the latter from SCA's paper and pulp mills, the companies said on 10 April.

Following an extensive start-up phase since the beginning of the year, the biorefinery now produced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), biodiesel, bio-naphtha, and bio-LPG, the companies said.

“The Gothenburg biorefinery represents our largest single investment in St1’s history, and a significant milestone in our energy transition roadmap,” St1 Nordic Oy CEO Henrikki Talvitie said.

St1’s activities include oil refining and renewable energy solutions such as waste-based advanced biofuels and industrial wind power.

SCA has 2.6M ha of forest land in northern Sweden and approximately 70,000ha in the Baltics and its main business focus is the development, manufacture and marketing of personal care and paper products.

SCA Renewable Energy president Mikael Källgren said the facility’s use of tall oil – a byproduct of the company’s pulp mill – would improve SCA’s energy efficiency.
