Bulk liquid transport, storage and logistics company Stolt-Nielsen has announced that it would be bunkering all ships in its Stolt-Nielsen Inland Tanker Service (SNITS) fleet – more than 30 in total – with renewable fuel in December.

The HVO20 fuel - an 80/20 blend of hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) - was expected to reduce carbon emissions from the SNITS fleet by around 18% during the month, compared to the ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) fuel traditionally used, the company said on its LinkedIn page on 2 December.

“[This initiative] underlines our commitment to exploring and implementing energy-efficiency measures where possible,” SNITS general manager Maickel Uijtewaal said.

The move was one of a series of sustainability initiatives for the SNITS fleet, the company said.

In August 2024, Stolt Tankers’ vessel Stolt Main bunkered 100% renewable HVO100 fuel for the first time, while five other vessels also made the move to renewable biofuels.

Part of Stolt-Nielsen, Stolt Tankers operates a fleet of more than 160 vessels, providing global transportation services for bulk liquid chemicals, edible oils, acids and clean petroleum products.

Stolt-Nielsen is active in the bulk liquid logistics, distribution and aquaculture products sectors and operates in 30 countries.
