Leading chemical tanker operator Stolt Tankers has announced that its barge Stolt Main has moved to 100% renewable fuel (HVO100) usage.

The company said the move to HVO100 – the purest form of hydrotreated vegetable oil produced from processed vegetable oils or animal-based fats – followed three years of the Stolt Main, and several other Stolt Tankers vessels, running on HVO20, a 20:80 blend of HVO.

While HVO20 usage had reduced the barge’s carbon emissions by 18%, the move to HVO100 – supplied by GoodFuels – would reduce its CO2 emissions by approximately 90%, the company said on 20 August.

Stolt Tankers has been researching and testing the use of biofuels in its ships for many years as part of its long-term sustainability strategy and announced its partnership with GoodFuels in 2021.

“Stolt Tankers is committed to investigating renewable fuels and we strive to not only meet but be ahead of the transition towards low-carbon fuels,” Stolt Tankers president Maren Schroeder said.

“Our latest move to HVO100 on Stolt Main supports our efforts to achieve our own sustainability ambitions and also meet regulatory requirements and industry ambitions, such as the European Union's aim to reduce carbon emissions by 55% by 2030.”

Part of Stolt-Nielsen, Stolt Tankers operates a fleet of more than 160 vessels, providing global transportation services for bulk liquid chemicals, edible oils, acids and clean petroleum products.

Stolt-Nielsen is active in the bulk liquid logistics, distribution and aquaculture products sectors and operates in 30 countries.
