Process technology specialist Topsoe has been selected to provide its HydroFlex technology for HOLBORN Europa Raffinerie’s renewable fuels refinery in Hamburg, Germany.

The new renewable fuels complex would be developed inside HOLBORN’s existing oil refinery in Hamburg, which processed up to 5M tonnes/year of crude oil into gasoline, diesel, heating oil and feedstock for the chemical industry, Topsoe said on 14 August.

Due to become operational in early 2027, the new complex would produce approximately 220,000 tonnes/year of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from waste and residue feedstocks, the company said.

Topsoe said the production would help meet growing demand for SAF.

“To support the energy transition, we need a cleaner long-distance transportation sector. A key step in securing this is by increasing production of SAF and renewable diesel,” Topsoe chief commercial officer Elena Scaltritti said.

Designed for the production of renewable jet fuel and diesel, Topsoe said its HydroFlex technology could be used to convert fats, oils and greases in both grassroots units and revamps for co-processing or stand-alone applications.
