Process technology specialist Topsoe has signed an agreement to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel technology to Refinaria de Petróleo Riograndense (Riograndense) in Brazil.

The technologies would be used to produce SAF and renewable diesel from soyabean oil and tallow feedstocks at Riograndense’s Rio Grande plant, scheduled to become operational in the first half of 2028, Topsoe said on 13 November.

“With Brazil setting ambitious airline emissions reduction targets in October this year, Riograndense is one of the country’s early movers to ensure SAF supply is available for airline operators on time,” Topsoe chief commercial officer Elena Scaltritti said.

Designed for the production of renewable jet fuel and diesel, Topsoe said its technology could be used to convert fats, oils and greases in both grassroots units and revamps for co-processing or stand-alone applications.

The company said its H2bridge technology could be used to replace external fossil feedstocks for production of hydrogen by processing waste propane and off gases from the HydroFlex process and converting it into green hydrogen which is then consumed in the same process.

Owned by Petrobras, Braskem and Ultrapar, the Riograndense Oil Refinery’s main operations include the processing and sale of petroleum derivatives, particularly gasoline, diesel oil, petrochemical naphtha, fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other products.
