French energy and petroleum company TotalEnergies has signed a partnership agreement with Spanish discount airline Volotea for the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Volotea had agreed to purchase up to 7.5M litres of SAF produced by TotalEnergies between 2025-2029, the airline said in a 15 April statement.
The fuel was set to be used on flights Volotea operates out of French airports.
“Although France is making progress in setting up infrastructure for the production of SAF, it is essential to put in place a system of incentives for the various players in the sector to stimulate the use of this sustainable fuel and encourage investment in the research and development of new technologies, as well as in its large-scale production and distribution,” Volotea CEO and founder Carlos Muñoz said in a statement.
Volotea had previously signed SAF supply contracts with other producers, the most recent being an August 2024 agreement with Repsol, in which Volotea agreed to buy up to 6.1M litres of SAF.
Volotea began using SAF on its planes in 2022 and has committed to reducing its direct CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030, compared to 2012 emissions.
The airline said it had reached a 47% milestone and that it may reach the 50% target this year.
