Veramaris given go-ahead for fish oil alternative in pet food

Algal oil ingredient supplier for pet food Veramaris Pets has been given the go-ahead to sell its marine algal oil feed ingredient in the USA, the company announced on 19 October.

The declaration by the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center of Veterinary Medicine that the product was GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe), meant that the product could now be used in dog food.

A source of omega-3 for pet food, Veramaris Pets Algal Oil provided two to five times more EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids compared to fish oil, the company said. The oil was made from microalgae.

“Not only is Veramaris Pets sustainable, it also provides a concentration of EPA & DHA omega-3 exceeding 50% and can be used in dog foods that are sold across the US,” said Jeff Alex, global head of business development for companion animals at Veramaris.

Headquartered in Delft, the Netherlands, Veramaris is a joint venture between DSM and Evonik, both global science and speciality chemicals companies.
