Energy storage and infrastructure company VTTI is working in partnership with renewable feedstocks trader Connex to develop a pre-treatment facility at VTTI’s terminal in Amsterdam.
The project combined the market and technology capabilities of Connex with VTTI’s energy infrastructure development, logistics and storage, VTTI said on 11 October.
Due to become operational by 2027, VTTI said the Greenstock Pre-treatment Facility (GPF) would be able to store, blend and pre-treat over 400,000 tonnes/year of renewable feedstocks for use in the production of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
“This facility … will be a significant contributor towards helping the Port of Amsterdam reach its goal to be one of the most sustainable ports in Europe by 2030,” Jaap Koomen, senior vice president and head of country for VTTI in the Netherlands, said.
Headquartered in Rotterdam, Connex trades renewable feedstocks such as animal fats, used cooking oil (UCO), brown grease and other advanced waste and residue streams for use in the production of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Also based in Rotterdam, VTTI develops and operates energy infrastructure, including energy storage terminals, renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities and liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminals.
A global liquid bulk energy fuel storage and handling service provider, the company operates an energy storage terminal at each location in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region.
For the GPF project, VTTI said its terminal in Amsterdam would provide 70,000m³ of tank storage on site.
